Focus on What Matters – Don’t Get Lost in the Small Stuff

Golf Balls, Pebbles, and Sand – A Simple Life Lesson

I recently came across a demonstration that perfectly illustrates how we prioritise our time and energy.

A man stood in front of a group with an empty jar. He filled it with golf balls and asked, “Is it full?” The group said, “Yes.”

Then, he added small pebbles, shaking the jar so they settled around the golf balls. Again, he asked, “Is it full?” Again, they said, “Yes.”

Finally, he poured in sand, shaking it until it filled every last gap. Now, the jar was truly full.

This simple analogy explains how we choose to spend our time.

What Does It Mean?

The golf balls represent the things that truly matter in life, such as family, health, financial security, and personal well-being. The pebbles are things you enjoy, like hobbies, social activities, and travel.

The sand is everything else. The day-to-day admin, minor tasks, and distractions that fill your time but do not move you forward. If you fill your jar with sand first, there will be no room for the golf balls.

What Are Your Golf Balls?

My mum is 71 years old and in great health (touch wood). She worked hard all her life as a Education Adviser for Music and Arts, before retiring comfortably at 58.

When I asked my mum about her golf balls, she immediately said, “My grandchildren.” But she was spending more time on pebbles, like hobbies, and even more time on sand, like household admin and financial tasks. These were things she could afford to outsource, but she was still doing them herself.

Are you confusing pebbles with golf balls, just like my mum did? She was losing valuable time that could have been spent on what mattered most.

Take a moment to consider what your priorities are. Are you spending time on what truly matters, or is your jar full of sand? Are you focusing on financial security, or are you letting small distractions stop you from taking action?

Financial Claims Shouldn’t Be Another Distraction

Many people know they have a claim but put it off because they believe the process will be too time-consuming or stressful. They allow the sand of daily life to push it further down their to-do list, even when they have lost money they are entitled to claim back.

A financial claim is unlikely to be a golf ball for you, but it is for us. It is what we do every day, and we know how to handle the process quickly and effectively.

How Will You Use the Time You Save?

Think about how much time you could save by letting professionals take care of your financial claim. Would you use that time to focus on your business, your family, or your personal well-being?

By outsourcing something that is sand to you, you not only free up time but also gain from expert knowledge, ensuring the best possible outcome.

Over the years, I have met countless people who knew they had a claim but kept putting it off because life got in the way. I get it, we all have full jars. But I have also seen what happens when people take action. They recover money that was rightfully theirs, and with that, they gain something even more valuable, peace of mind. That is why Claim My Loss exists. Let us take care of the sand so you can focus on your golf balls.

If you like the Golf Balls, Pebbles and Sand analogy, I wrote an article on my business page about this too, you can read it here
