Background: Teak Plantation Investment Scandal
In March 2022, Green IS Group Limited and GIS Forestry Limited entered liquidation, owing at least £8.5 million to around 250 investors. These companies offered bonds linked to Brazilian teak plantations, marketed as sustainable investments with high returns of 8% to 11%, over terms of 2 to 10 years.
Investors were led to believe that their money was safe, tied to tangible assets (teak trees or saplings), and backed by formal safeguards. However, investigations revealed that:
- The companies did not hold valid ownership rights to the plantations
- No debenture was registered over Green IS Group’s assets
- GIS Forestry only registered security over its assets in late 2020, despite issuing bonds since 2014
- Promotional material misled investors about the safety of their capital
Director Disqualified for Misleading Practices
The Insolvency Service concluded that Guy Conroy, director of both companies, allowed misleading and irresponsible trading. As a result, he has been banned from acting as a director for 11 years, effective from 27 March 2025.
The Service described the companies’ conduct as “wholly unacceptable” and warned of the damage caused by falsely promoted investment schemes. The largest individual loss reported in the liquidation process was £636,000.
