Corporate and Professional Pensions Declared in Default: SIPP Clients Can Now Pursue Compensation

pension

Corporate and Professional Pensions Limited (CPPL), a SIPP operator based in Dorset, was declared in default by the FSCS on 25 July 2025, as part of a group of five firms formally failed on the same day. The default declaration is the formal step that allows the FSCS to begin paying compensation to eligible former clients.

A Familiar Pattern in the SIPP Sector

CPPL’s collapse followed a well-worn path in the SIPP sector. The firm accumulated Financial Ombudsman Service compensation awards it could not pay. Those awards had been made because CPPL failed to carry out adequate due diligence when accepting high-risk and often unregulated investments into its clients’ SIPP portfolios. When the firm could no longer meet its obligations, it failed.

The Sale to Westerby Trustee Services

CPPL’s business was sold to Westerby Trustee Services in March 2022, meaning the day-to-day administration of many clients’ pensions continued. However, the FSCS has been clear that this sale has no bearing on clients’ right to bring a compensation claim. The commercial sale of the business and the question of historical liability for unsuitable pension arrangements are entirely separate matters.

How to Progress Your Claim

Over 100 claims had already been submitted against CPPL by mid-2025. The FSCS is accepting claims and working through each case individually. The key issue in most cases is whether CPPL failed in its duty to scrutinise the investments being placed inside its clients’ SIPPs before accepting them. If you believe you have a valid case, you may wish to explore your SIPP claims options.

If you held a CPPL SIPP and invested in assets that later proved worthless, inaccessible or simply completely unsuitable for a pension, you were not given the protection you were entitled to. The firm that held your pension on trust had an obligation to check. It did not. That is not a reflection of your judgement. It is a reflection of theirs. You may be entitled to pension compensation of up to £85,000.
